The Importance of Routine Physical Exams

A pediatric physical is performed by licensed pediatricians to assess your child’s overall health and well-being before they start playing a sport, attending school, or engaging in other physical activities that could endanger their health and the health of others. Physicals also provide documentation that your child has a clean bill of health to attend school and engage in physical activities. Without them, it may cause delays or an inability to participate in a particular sport or similar activity.

What to Expect During a Physical Exam

During a routine El Paso pediatric physical exam, one of our experienced pediatricians will inquire about your child’s health. This includes reviewing your family’s medical history and your child’s diet, daily movement, and vaccination status.

From there, we’ll collect their vital signs, such as their blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and respiration rate. Our pediatrician will then listen to your child’s heart using a stethoscope to identify any irregularities.

Physical examinations also include assessing your child’s head, neck, abdomen, reflexes, skin, nails, and pulses for any abnormalities.

School & Sport Physicals

In most states, students are required to return a copy of their physical examination to inform other adults of any health issues that could potentially interfere with their child’s performance. A pediatric physical in El Paso allows medical professionals to develop management plans for conditions like asthma or allergies, keeping your kids safe and healthy when they’re not home.

Common Pediatric Physical Questions

When should my child start receiving routine physical exams?

Infants should be seen three days after they’re born. Afterward, visit the doctor at the following ages:

- 1 month
- 2 months
- 3 months
- 4 months
- 6 months
- 9 months
- 1 year
- 15 months
- 18 months
- 2 years
- 2 ½ years

Afterward, your child can see their pediatrician once a year.

What is the difference between a physical and a sports physical?

The truth is, they’re not that different! A sports physical focuses on your child’s well-being as it relates to playing a sport, while a regular check-up (or physical) focuses on your child’s daily health. In many cases, a sports physical and a “regular” physical can be performed simultaneously. Just let your pediatrician know if your child will be joining a sport!

What is the difference between a physical and wellness exam?

Physical exams help pediatricians identify what’s wrong with a patient and develop a strategy. In contrast, a wellness exam focuses on preventing and detecting potential health risks in infants, children, and young adults.
